Our Team

 Sean Doty, Owner

Sean started Missoula Compost services in September 2017 with the help and support of his friends and family.  Prior to beginning this L.L.C., Sean completed a service-term for the City of Missoula, and helped co-author Missoula's ZERObyFIFTY; Missoula's Pathway to Zero Waste. This plan was created to serve as a guide to help the community of Missoula reach a goal of 90% waste reduction by 2050.

Sean attended the University of Montana in Missoula, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, as well as an associate degree in Applied Science and Sustainable Energy. He has a professional certificate in Home Energy Auditing, as well as a certificate in Recycling Technology.

Sean was born and raised in Missoula, Montana. He remembers composting with his mother in her large garden as a boy. He was always fascinated by the enriched soil created by food scraps and yard waste, and the healthy produce which grew as a result.

Sean grew up with a great appreciation for the great outdoors of Western Montana, spending all of his spare time kayaking Montana rivers and climbing in the scenic mountain ranges. This appreciation for the natural environment and sustainable recycling practices were the foundation for his idea to create Missoula's first compost collection service.

“I want this composting service to be made available to all Missoulians, both commercial and residential, regardless of location. If we are going to improve waste disposal in our city, it will have to be a community effort.”

Jen Doty, CEO

Jen is the CEO (Compost Executive Officer) for the Missoula Compost. She has a background in public and environmental health, and is excited about getting her community on board with waste diversion. She would like to educate more Missoulians about reducing the city's carbon footprint, and about the negative impacts of methane gas production in local landfills.

While she spends most of her time working in the medical field, Jen has contributed many hours to help build our Missoula composting plan.

"There are so many community health benefits to be had from organic composting, landfill reduction, and urban community gardens. I really hope our plan catches on here in Missoula."

Tyler Myers, Route Driver

Tyler moved to Missoula in 2013. Originally from Southern Minnesota, he wanted to get out of the flat Midwest, and into the Rocky Mountains.

Tyler chose Missoula Compost because he believes in the mission of the company, and it feels good providing a valuable service to the community. Tyler also enjoys moving around all day, getting to be outside a lot, and listening to music/podcasts/audiobooks while working.

On his daily travels collecting Missoula's organics, the most interesting sights Tyler sees could range from natural sights like sunrises, wildlife, art, to genuine human interactions. Not to mention all of the dogs!! Especially the Pugs on the Monday route that can climb up to the top of the fence to look over and say hi.

Tyler enjoys spending time with his girlfriend enjoying all of the social events and recreational activities Missoula has to offer. Some of our favorites are Tell Us Something, movies at The Roxy, concerts, climbing at Freestone, XCskiing, taking the dogs to Blue Mountain, cooking together, getting on the river in the summer, and playing pickleball.  Tyler has two Huskies named Goose and Chowder and he loves getting out with them as much as possible.

Tyler's favorite thing to compost is Watermelons. The weirdest thing he has seen in the compost bin are animals. Tyler is happy to pick them up, but they can be a little startling.

“I believe in Missoula Compost’s mission and feel good providing a valuable service to the community.”

Lara Zander & Maia, Account Manager

Lara grew up in Kalispell, MT. After graduating from MSU with a bachelor's degree in Business Marketing she moved to Lolo and eventually into Missoula.

Lara chose Missoula Compost because she wanted to work closely with her community. We are all proud of our forests and rivers. The folks at Missoula Compost work hard to create a sustainable community. As Missoula grows, we want to ensure there will always be lots of places to celebrate nature.

Lara grew up hiking and backpacking all over Montana. She plays and coaches both soccer and hockey. Lara also practices and competes in Jiu Jitsu. In the summer she enjoys exploring Montana’s backroads and trails on her DR650 adventure motorcycle. Lara also has been known to dabble in occasional oil and acrylic painting.

Lara’s favorite thing to compost is banana peels because it was her very first item added to her compost bin.

“I am excited to see Missoula Compost grow as it has so much potential to truly make meaningful change in our community.”
