Veteran’s Day

Hi Composters!

Today is Veteran’s Day and we wanted to give a big thanks to all those that have served in our country’s military. While a lot of folks may receive a day off from work for the holiday, we don’t hear the history of the holiday very often.

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming Nov. 11 as Veterans Day. Since then, Veterans Day acknowledges veterans of all wars, and all who once served in the U.S. military. Veterans Day not only honors those who have served and sacrificed in defense of our nation, but also recognizes the enduring spirit of duty, honor, and selflessness that characterizes our veterans.

In Missoula, here are some events for the public:

  • Rocky Mountain Museum of Military History, Bldg. T-316, Fort Missoula, open noon to 5 Nov. 11 for a Veterans Day open house. Pop-up presentations 1-5 p.m.
